HISTORY OF ALABAMA AND HER PEOPLE, The American Historical Society Inc., Chicago & New York, 1927. Vol II p129

Ausie Esten Yow, President of the Planters State Bank of Pine Hill, is one of the experienced financiers of Wilcox County and a man (whose) astuteness and Conservative policies are generally recognized. He was born on a fam two miles south of Pine Hill 3-6-1888 a son of Eli and Elizabeth (Crisswell) Yow and a grandson of Bradley Yow who came from South Carolina to Wilcox Co. Ala many years ago, and was a founder of the family in this region.

Ausie Esten Yow attended the public schools at Pine Hill and received a high school diploma and 2 summer schools at Thomasville, Alabama for teachers after which he taught school at Aimwell, Alabama. At the close of this school at Aimwell, he was given the position as bookkeeper by Mr. Clay Sheffield, banker of Pine Hill and was later promoted to cashier of this institution. he remained in this position until 1913 when he organized a stock company and erected a bank at Sweet Water. This new banking institution grew rapidly under his management until 1922, when he sold his interest in Sweet Water State Bank to purchase the controlling interest and assume the Presidency of Planters State Bank of Pine Hill, thereby moving back to the town of his boyhood days. Mr. Yow still maintains his legal residence at Sweet Water and is a member of the County Board of Education of Marengo County. During the years he resided at Sweet Water he was a leader in the civic affairs of the town and was to a large degree instrumental in the organization and erection of a Baptist Church and a new $20,000 consolidated school building, he being the largest contributor in land and money.

In 1911 Mr. Yow was married to Catherine Grantham, of Aimwell, Ala. a daughter of John C. Grantham. She was educated at Aimwell, Pine Hill and Livingston. The following children have been born to Mr. & Mrs. Yow: Esten Eli, Elsie, Elizabeth, Elvin, Emerson and Eleanor. As will be seen all of their names begin with E. He and his wife are members of the Baptist Church, he has been a Deacon since 1916 and is now Supt. of Sunday School. It was through the instrumentality of Mr. Yow that the new Baptist Church was erected there in 1924, his friend, Mr. Clay Sheffield, upon his return to Pine Hill, entered into an agreement with him to donate $12,500 on a new brick church provided Mr. Yow would see that the other members raised $20,000 and a church was erected costing $32,500.

Fraternally he belongs to the Knights of Pythias, the Dramatic Order Knights of Thorassan and the Woodman of the World. His progress has been steady and healthy and while he has been rising he has earned and retains the confidence of his fellow citizens who appreciate his many excellent traits of character.

HISTORY OF ALABAMA AND HER PEOPLE, The American Historical Society Inc., Chicago & New York, 1927. Vol II p129

Eli was Confederate soldier serving with Hoods' Texas troops in Texas and VA. He was wounded at the battle of Chickamauga while holding his gun in front of breast reloading, and a ball from enemy's gun struck his weapon, deflecting the bullet so that his leg was struck instead of his body. Later he was captured and held a prisoner. Following the war he was very successfully engaged in farming and he died in 1908, when he was 73 years old. His wife passed away in 1899, when she was 44 years old.

In addition to his farming interests Eli Yow operated a cotton gin and grist mill about 2 miles south of Pine Hill and a cotton gin, grist mill and saw mill in partnership with O. P. Kelly at Pine Hill, and he was one of a Committee to select a name for the town that is now called Pine Hill. A well educated man he kept himself posted on current events. Always a liberal supporter of schools and churches, and he united with the Baptist Church when he was 64 years of age. His partner, Mr. Kelly, gave a large portion of the lumber that went into the church and school buildings at Pine Hill.

Eli Yow was twice married, first to Adelia Pruitt who died in about 2 years leaving an infant girl whom they named Lula Adelia and who married N. M. Baggett and now lives in Mobile, Alabama. His second wife was Elizabeth Crisswell and to this union was born 9 children: 5 survive, namely: Jennie, wife of Dr. J. Lee Woodcock of Phil. PA; Hassie, wife of John A. Hussey of Toledo, Ohio; Ausie Esten; Ella L., wife of E. H. Cowart of Evergreen, AL; and Clara L., wife of Dr. C. M. Pearce of Calumet, OK. 2 sons Eli B. and Grover C. both of whom died at 21 years of age. Minerva died at 7 years and Robert died in infancy.
