OBITUARY

Weber City John Paul Blanton, 83 of Weber City, went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 26, 2016 at Bristol Hospice House following a brief illness.

He was in the Virginia National Guard, 276 Engineering Battalion headquartered in Gate City. He was past president of the Gate City Jaycees and held several positions on state level. He was owner and operator of Scott County Lumber and Hardware.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, and mother of his son, Virginia Shepherd Blanton; his second wife, Ruth Tipton Blanton.

John is survived by his son, Michael Blanton and wife Melissa; step-daughter, April Gillenwater; grandchildren, Michelle Blanton Graham and husband Jordan and John Thomas Blanton; great-grandchildren, Riley Graham and Hudson Graham; step-grandson, Bryson Gillenwater; brother, Harold Blanton and wife Betty Lou Blanton.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, August 28, 2016 at Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City.

A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Rev. Paul Blessing officiating. Burial will follow in Holston View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Brent Meyers, Freddie Barnett, Ronnie Tipton, Harold Blanton, John Thomas Blanton and Bryson Gillenwater. Honorary pallbearers will be Burl Jennings, Howard Tipton, Paul Roark, Jordan Graham, Larry Thompson and Mike Grizzle.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Bristol Hospice House for the care given to our father during his illness.

The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Wellmont Foundation (Bristol Hospice House), PO 1069, Kingsport, TN 37662-9968.

Mr. and Mrs. William Shepherd's little child, Clarence, age 3 years, was badly scalded one day last week, when his mother took a dish of boiling water off the stove, thinking the child was in an adjoining room. It's hat saved the top of its head. It's face, hands and breast were so badly burned that it was thought it would die. He is improving and it is hoped that it will recover. Dr. Combs was the attending physician.

OBITUARY

Rosie Whitaker Shepherd

PINSON, Ala. - Rosie Mae Whitaker Shepherd, 90, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 04, 2005 at Medical Center East in Birmingham, Ala.

She was born in Tazewell County, Va. on April 22, 1914 and was the daughter of the late Newton Whitaker and Ella Mae Pack Whitaker. She had resided in Weber City for many years before moving to Alabama. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Shepherd was a member of First Baptist Church of Weber City, Va.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Shepherd; daughter, Virginia Blanton; sister, Addie Minton; brother, Roy Whitaker.

Surviving are her son, James C. (Jim) Shepherd and wife Patricia, Trussville, Ala.; grandchildren, Jaclyn Shepherd and Vickie Stockton, Savannah, Ga.; Mike Blanton, Woodstock, Ga.; Roy-J. Shepherd, Vestavia Hills, Ala.; Carlton J. Shepherd, Leeds, Ala.; Jim Shepherd Jr., Moody, Ala.; several great grandchildren; sister, Nancy Tate, Richmond, Va.

Calling hours are 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at Colonial Funeral Home, Weber City. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home chapel at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Dean Smith officiating. Music will be provided by Weber City First Baptist Church choir.

Entombment will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Greenhills Memory Gardens, Cedar Bluff, Va. Serving as pallbearers will be Mike Blanton, Roy-J. Shepherd, Carlton J. Shepherd, Jim Shepherd Jr., John Thomas Blanton, and Bill Duke.

In memory of Rosie Shepherd, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 2155, Weber City, VA 24290 or Opening Doors, 8049 Ormesby Lane, Woodford, VA 22581 which is a service organization which helps persons with disabilities.

Ezra Linkous, "The Gretna Green of Cedar Bluff." Mr. Beavers and Miss Mollie McGuire, of near Laurel, were married at the same time.
