1870 Census, McDowell Co, WV, Big Creek District, page 8, Family #53. Listed as Amanda Nelson, age 10, born in NC, in household of step-father, James Marion Dancy.

Not listed in the household in 1880. Had she married, left home, or died? In the 1880 Census for Tazewell Co. VA, district 88 household 66 is Amanda Nelson, age 20 living in the household of W. H. Atwood. She is working as a cook and there is a 3 month old child, John Nelson with her. He is listed as a nephew. Amanda is unable to read or write and has her birthplace as Virginia as well as those of her parents. More than likely this is the Amanda Nelson, daughter of Harvey and Sarah Garrett Nelson. The age is about the same plus Tazewell Co. VA and McDowell Co. WV are next to each other. The child is listed as a nephew, however it is more probable he is Amanda's son. The other possibility is that he is the son of either sister Catherine or Sarah who are living with their mother and stepfather using the last name of Dancy. Amanda and her father were born in NC, but we don't know who provided this information to the census taker saying they were born in VA.

1860 Census for Ashe Co. NC, household 369, Harvey Nelson, age 30, farmer, personal property woth $185 born in VA, living with wife Sarah, age 27, and chidren Jane age 7, James age 5, Mary age 3, Susan age 1, and Jospeh Nelson age 10. Was Joseph from an earlier marriage, an illegitimate child, or the child of a arelative? Since Harvey has a son named James, this gives weight that his first name is James as indicated in the 1850 Washington Co. VA census, plus the fact they are living 2 households from Daniel and Catherine Nelson in NC. His wife Sarah was born in VA, and they relocated to Ashe Co. by 1850 according to the birth of their oldest child Jane, age 7 in North Carolina.

Harvey married Sarah Emeline GARRETT 1852/1853, Ashe Co NC. Sarah was born Jun 1833, Virginia; died 7 Feb 1903, Greenbrier Co. WV; was buried 8 Feb 1903, McMillion Chapel, Greenbrier Co. WV. [Group Sheet]
