There is a surviving record for the 1831 census (extremely rare to be preserved) which shows a John and Sarah Whitaker in Ossett. In the first census to be preserved in 1841 he is listed as Head of the Household, living with Sarah on The Green, Westside, Ossett. He was a weaver.

"In 1753 Martha is mentioned in Benjamin?s short Will, where the property will remain with ?Martha Whitaker my wife for the rest of her life?

Mention is also made of Thomas, my eldest son, Francis, Joshua, daughter Martha and brother in law Joshua Haigh. This one document confirms Martha Haigh as being the person marrying Benjamin and the link to Francis in the next generation."
