Information from Find A Grave

According to the 12 Aug 1936 W.P.A. Historical Inventory of this cemetery by Scioto M. Herndon (online at Library of Virginia), there was a gravestone for:

"John Tate
Oct. 1747
(married Mary Doak)"

It lists: "Sources of Information: Informant: Sr. Alexander Murphy, descendant of Bumgardners, Bethel Green, R.F.D., Staunton, Virginia." There are documented mistakes in this survey on dates and wife Betsy Humphreys/Blackwood McCutchan.

It described the cemetery in 1936 as: "overgrown with weeds, bushes, briars, etc. as to be nearly inaccessible. It is on the top of a ridge completely surrounded by woods. ....many of the graves are deeply sunken, stones fallen and inscriptions obliterated." It adds "information given in the parenthesis." So "Mary Doak" is subjective.

John married Mary DOAK. Mary (daughter of James DOAK and Elizabeth) was born 1715, Antrim, Ulster, Ireland; died Aft 1745, Augusta Co. VA. [Group Sheet]
