    Victim of Hydrophobia
Mrs. Esther Butts Bitten by Mad Dog ? Resulted in Death

Mrs. Esther Butts, Seventy-eight years old, making her home with her son, J.V.Butts, died Saturday at 7:10 p.m., from the effects of a bite from a mad dog over a month ago.

About the 1st of February the Butts dog jumped on another dog and were fighting near the Butts home, when Mrs. Butts attempted to part them and the Butts dog bit her slightly on the back of the hand. The dog then went away and bit a number of dogs in the neighborhood, returning home at night, where it was found dead a short time after the above occurrence.

Nothing was thought of the bite on Mrs. Butts hand until last week, when it began to pain her, and on Wednesday as she went to take a drink the sight of the water threw her into convulsions. Physicians were at once called and everything done to get the poison out of her system, but it had too thorough a hold, and after seeing there was no chance for her recovery, the doctors tried only to relieve her great suffering, in which they were partially successful. She remained conscious until Saturday noon and death came Saturday evening.

Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon conducted by Rev. J.H. Deyo, after which the remains were interred in Twin Groves cemetery. They family have the heartfelt sympathy of all in their sad bereavement.

Esher Rice was born June 11, 1824; was married September 6, 1844, to James Butts at McArthur, Ohio. To this union was born nine children, of whom three are known to survive, as follows; William Butts, of Park Place, Oregon; J.V. Butts of Severy, and J.H. Butts, of Tallahassee, Florida. They moved from Ohio to Indiana in 1856, then came to Kansas in 1872, where they have lived ever since. She was a member of the M.E. Church for a number of years.

    Lonely? Ah, no, not lonely
    While Jesus standeth near.
He comes within the tent door,
    I feel His presence here.

    Friendless? Ah, no, not friendless
    While Jesus is my friend.
    I change, but He remaineth
    Sure loving to the end.

    Weary? Ah, yes, so weary,
    But leaning on His breast;
    My soul hath sweet assurance
    Of His eternal rest.

    BIOGRAPHY

    From Find A Grave
From Ruth Rice Patterson, his second great grandaughter

James Rice was born 27 November 1795 in the area of Wythe and Russell Counties, Virginia which later became Tazewell County created 20 December 1799. Specific parents cannot be proven. His age and birth date are taken from his Hebron Cemetery burial record; age at death. 6 August 1874, 78 years, 8 months, 10 days. James? family moved from Virginia to Gallia County, Ohio in the early 1800?s.

James can first be documented in August 1812 in Gallia County, Ohio where he is reflected as a private in the Ohio Militia in Captain Isaac Butler?s Company (9Aug1812 ? 9Oct1812) which was mobilized for the War of 1812. He again enlisted in Captain Joseph W. Ross? Company (1Sep1813 ? 1Mar1814) and served in the Detroit, Michigan area until discharged in March 1814. In 1850 James filed a Land Bounty claim with the US Government for this military service and was awarded 160 acres of government land located in Iowa. He later sold his interest in that land to another individual who took possession of the land in Iowa.

In 1815 James Rice married Violetta ?Zeletty? Keeton, 21 February 1815, in Gallia County, Ohio. Violetta Keeton was the daughter of David Keeton a Revolutionary War soldier residing in Gallia County, Ohio at the time. That marriage produced seven children, daughters Irena, Fatima and Esther, and sons Edward W., Tazwell (T.S.), Elias M., and James V. They were all born in the Gallia/Jackson/Athens County area of Ohio.

In late 1834, James Rice purchased land equating to approximately 120 acres in Athens County, Ohio (Athens County Deeds, Vol 7, pg 704). In 1850 due to county boundary changes that land relocated into newly formed Vinton County, Ohio. In the 1850 US Federal Census, the family was living in South Brown Township, Vinton County, Ohio. The James Rice family lived at this location until September 1856 when James and Violetta sold the family farm and moved to Eagle Creek Township, Lake County, Indiana. All of their seven children and their families moved with them to Indiana.

James was a farmer in Lake/Porter County, Indiana until his death, 6 August 1874. He owned land in Sections 15 and 16, Township 33N, Range 7W. Land which straddled County Line Road between Lake and Porter Counties.

His wife, Violetta, preceded him in death (15 September 1869). Both are buried in the Hebron Cemetery, Hebron, Indiana.

His obituary is a two sentence entry in the Porter County Vidette, dated 13 August 1874, Vol. 18, Pg.3, Col. 5. ?Died, on the 5th inst., at his residence two miles southwest of here, James Rice, Sen. He was a soldier in the War of 1812?.

    Greenfield Township

The first to settle in the township were Daniel Faulkner, James Rice (who died at the advanced age of one hundred and twenty years), and Andrew Faulkner. On the 22d of June, 1882, the latter gave an account of his early pioneer recollections to the one appointed to collect and record them for this work, and four days later he had "passed beyond the river," dying suddenly June 26th, 1882. The pioneers first settled at the forks of Symmes creek, Daniel Faulkner building the first cabin, in 1806.

A James Rice and Robert Bristco/Frisco had a large land holding in the area of Montgomery, Wythe, Tazewell County, Virginia called the James Rice Robert Frisco improvement. A number of land sales from this improvement are listed
in the court record books of Montgomery, Wythe and Tazewell Counties.

James and his wife Mary sold their land in Virginia and moved to Gallia County, Ohio in their later years. James is listed in the 1840 census as 116 years old in good health. This was so unusual that the census taker wrote it across the line from James' name. A Gallia County News paper mentioned his longevity a couple of years later. The last Virginia land sale I have listed is to their grandson Jeremiah Lambert for a token price.

They spent their last few years of life in Gallia County with the offspring of their daughter Hannah who married Job Lambert. Some of the children of this Rice-Lambert related family migrated to Carter and Lawrence County Kentucky in the early 1800's.

James was born Aug. 24, 1724 according to the census record. The news article stated he was born in June. James's daughter Hannah married John Withrow in Cabell County, Virginia after the death of her husband Job Lambert. The 1850 census records list Hannah as age 90 born in Virginia. That would place James in Virginia in 1760. James was living in Montgomery County in 1782 next door
to Robert Briscoe, other Rice's on the tax list that year were John and Spencer. Job Lambert's father Phillip was also there.
