    Greenfield Township

The first to settle in the township were Daniel Faulkner, James Rice (who died at the advanced age of one hundred and twenty years), and Andrew Faulkner. On the 22d of June, 1882, the latter gave an account of his early pioneer recollections to the one appointed to collect and record them for this work, and four days later he had "passed beyond the river," dying suddenly June 26th, 1882. The pioneers first settled at the forks of Symmes creek, Daniel Faulkner building the first cabin, in 1806.

A James Rice and Robert Bristco/Frisco had a large land holding in the area of Montgomery, Wythe, Tazewell County, Virginia called the James Rice Robert Frisco improvement. A number of land sales from this improvement are listed
in the court record books of Montgomery, Wythe and Tazewell Counties.

James and his wife Mary sold their land in Virginia and moved to Gallia County, Ohio in their later years. James is listed in the 1840 census as 116 years old in good health. This was so unusual that the census taker wrote it across the line from James' name. A Gallia County News paper mentioned his longevity a couple of years later. The last Virginia land sale I have listed is to their grandson Jeremiah Lambert for a token price.

They spent their last few years of life in Gallia County with the offspring of their daughter Hannah who married Job Lambert. Some of the children of this Rice-Lambert related family migrated to Carter and Lawrence County Kentucky in the early 1800's.

James was born Aug. 24, 1724 according to the census record. The news article stated he was born in June. James's daughter Hannah married John Withrow in Cabell County, Virginia after the death of her husband Job Lambert. The 1850 census records list Hannah as age 90 born in Virginia. That would place James in Virginia in 1760. James was living in Montgomery County in 1782 next door
to Robert Briscoe, other Rice's on the tax list that year were John and Spencer. Job Lambert's father Phillip was also there.
