    Donald S. Bradley passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2011 after a prolonged illness at the age of 91. He has been a resident of Bradenton, Florida for the past 24 years. He was born on April 11, 1920 in Austin, Pennsylvania to Lillian Belle and John Wesley Bradley.

    Donald served as a captain with the US Army and Air Force during World War II and the Korean War. Donald received a degree from Randolph-Macon College in Virginia. Donald worked with the C & O Railroad in Huntington, West Virginia. He also worked as an executive for J.C. Penney and May Company (Federated Stores). Upon retiring from Federated Stores which is now Macy's, Donald worked for the federal government as a volunteer with the International Executive Service Corps for several years designing computer systems in different countries. He was one of the creators of UNIVAC computers and worked with Grace Hopper during this period. He was on the team to help develop the computer language COBOL and developing computerized methods of inventory control including bar scanning which is now being used in retailing.

    Don moved to the Whitfield area of Sarasota in 1975. Don belonged to Sara Bay Country Club where he served in the offices of President and Treasurer. He was also a member of the American Legion Kirby Stewart Post 24 and the Royal Order of Moose. He also served on the Manatee County Sherriff's Advisory Board for several years.

    Survivors include: Wife, Ellen B. Bradley and two stepchildren; Dr. Michael Bird and wife Ro and their children Carrie and Therese; and Deborah Pareti, and her children; Amy Jaworski and Christina Pratus and their families.

    He was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy Bradley and his daughter Patricia Jones. He is also survived by his son-in-law Walter Jones and his grandchildren: Deborah Meyer and husband Todd, Melissa Patton and husband Mark, Pamela Hill and husband Brian, Harrison Jones and wife Wendy, Bradley Jones and wife Debbie. He also is survived by eight great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters Margie Pierce and Lorraine Moran and was predeceased by two brothers and a sister.

    Don belonged to Trinity United Methodist Church in Bradenton where the Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, July 3rd at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Jim Rosenberg officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church.
