Notes:

Robert Alexander was one of the early settlers of Augusta Co. VA.

A History of Rockbridge County, Virginia by Oren F. Morton, published in 1920 source for the following information:

Robert, son of William Alexander, Sr., came from near Londonderry, in 1737, and lived about ten years near Philadelphia. He was well-to-do for those days, and was a man of character, education, and influence. Robert, a Master of Arts of the University of Dublin, founded the school which finally grew into Washington and Lee University, but was himself a resident of Beverly Manor.

Page 119.--15th February, 1763. Robert Alexander sold to William Alexander, £100, 304 acres, 3 roods and 15 perches; cor. George Henderson. Delivered: William Alexander, May Court, 1765. [This land is the 304-acre tract located in the Borden Tract acquired from John Moore in 1760, probably sold to Robert's son, William Alexander]

Page 371 20th February, 1781. Robt. Alexander's will - - To wife, Esther; to daughters, Sarah and Eleanor, unmarried; to sons, Peter, Hugh, James. Peter's tract at Lessley's cabin; James adjoins John Fulton and James Henry (all sons unmarried); to daughters Ann and Esther, 5 chillings each; to son William; to son, Thomas; to son, Robert; to grandchild, Martha. Executors and guardians, wife and son Robert. Teste: Hugh Fulton, Thos. Stephenson, Thos. Baird. Proved, 18th November, 1783, by Baird and Stephenson. Executors qualify.

Robert married Esther Beard ca 1740, Pennsylvania. Esther was born 1724, Ulster, Ireland or Pennsylvania; died 1769, Staunton, Augusta Co. VA. [Group Sheet]

Thomas married and left a daughter and a son. The daughter married Joseph Parks and had a daughter named Margaret. The son, William, was "a very fat man". He left four sons:

Archibald, William, who married a widow in Philadelphia, Robert and Peter.

Died:
Some researchers have his place of death as Augusta Co. VA, but there are no records to confirm this. Secondary sources about his children make no mention of his immigrating with them to the colonies. So it is more likely he died in Northern Ireland.

William married Jean McNutt Between 1700 and 1706, Raphoe, County Donegal, Ulster, Ireland. Jean was born 1680, Cunningham Manor, Co. Down Ulster Ireland. [Group Sheet]

Thomas was a devout presbyterian who came to Ulster or Northern Ireland in 1652 and settled in County Donegal.

Alexander, Austin and Arnold Families, by Frances Austin Arnold, pp 1-7, states that Thomas Alexander (son of Archibald Alexander, b 1610) was born in Scotland in 1630 and with his two brothers, Strong and William, went to Ireland in 1652 for "distates of the Rump pariliament of Cromwell. They were intensely Prsbyterian, but loyal to the Catholic Stuarts, being blood kinsmen."

MARYLAND HERALDIC FAMILIES pg 60-61 extracts from "The McClure Family by Rev James Alexander McClure, published 1914, Petersburg Va. and Genealogy as given in Rogers "Memorial of The Earl of Sterling" and by Francis T. A. Junkin's "Genealogical Chart' , Junkin's "Virginia .Family "1908 Thomas Alexander b in Scotland 1630 but removed to Ireland, 1652 for distaste of The Parliament of Cromwell. An intense Presbyterian, but loyal to The Catholic Stuarts of whom he was a blood kinsman.

The FIRST NOVA SCOTIAN "Thomas Alexander (son of Archibald Alexander b. in 1610) was b. in Scotland in 1630.He went, with his 2 brothers, Strong and William, to Ireland in 1652 for distaste of The Rump Parliament of Cromwell. He may descend from the House of MacALEXANDER of Tarbet, Kintyre, Scotland. Unconfirmed and needs more research.

Thomas married Marion PEADIE 31 Mar 1676, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Marion was born 1648, Scotland; died 1703, Cunningham Manor, Co. Down Ulster Ireland. [Group Sheet]

In 1631 Archibald Alexander of Tarbert acknowledged Sir William Alexander, Viscount Stirling as chief of The clan Alster. Sir William did get a land grant in Ulster in 1616 from Sir James Cunningham [orgin of the Manor Cunningham] who sold February 26 1616,-2000 acres called Decastrose and Portlogh.

Archibald Alexander of Tarbert had son Gorrie Alexander heir apparent (1627 and 1636 records) in 1631 Archibald Alexander of Tarbert acknowledged Sir William as chief of The clan Alister. [Allister and Alexander are possibly being used interchangeably]

Archibald Alexander born about 1611 as he had land in 1630 and in army of Mr. Alexander Steward, undertaker of 1000 acres (Swords only)in Barony of Raphoe. Archibald Alexander is found in 1663 (Ballybegleymore) and 1665 tax rolls in Ballibegly.

An Archibald Alexander was b. 1610/14, Scotland; d. 31 March 1689, Ballieghan, County Donegal, Ireland; bur. at Balleighan; m. Elizabeth MACKAY/McKAY, b. 1617-37 & d. 30 Jan 1714/15, Ballieghan. This Archibald settled near his father's Home at Balleighan. He is found in The registers of Taghboyne Parrish in The Laggan Presbytery in 1661, where he was an elder from 1672 to 1681. He and Elizabeth had at least four sons: Joseph, John, Archibald and James. Faircloth states that records disclose they all remained in Ireland.

Archibald married Elizabeth McKay Ulster Ireland. Elizabeth was born , Ballieghan,Co. Donegal,IUlster Ireland; died 30 Jan 1715, Eridy,Ballieghan,Co. Donegal Ulster Ireland. [Group Sheet]
