- William was living in his father's home at the time of the 1860 Washington Co. VA Census, along with his wife, Abigail Florence Murdock, age 19.
William served in the Civil War as a private in Co. B, 48th Inf., 1st Division Brigade of Northern Virginia...(Ref: Civil War Records of Washington Co. VA). Records do not indicate he was killed while on active duty, however time frame suggests he either died during service or from war related injuries. William and Abigail had two children. Joye Boardman was told by a great-great granddaughter, William did die while in the army in 1862. He died Feb 28, 1862 at Winchester, Frederick Co., VA. and was brought back to Saltville, VA for burial. [1]
