Bertha (Huffman) Bryant, 84, widow of Jackson Mahone Bryant, died at 7:59 a.m. Saturday (April 17, 2004) in the Summit Square Retirement Community, Waynesboro, where she had been residing.
She was born on February 11, 1920, in Raphine, a daughter of the late Robert Kline Sr. and Maude (Sensabaugh) Huffman. She was valedictorian of her class at Spottswood High School and graduated from Madison College. Before retiring, she was a public school teacher. Mrs. Bryant was a member of Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church, the A.A.R.P. of Colonial Heights, and the Retired Teachers' Association.
In addition to her husband, who died in April, 1980; she was also preceded in death by a sister, Claudine H. Heizer; and a brother, Robert Kline Huffman Jr. Family includes two sons and a daughter-in-law, John William Bryant and Robert Jackson and Mary (Cauley) Bryant, all of Lynchburg; a sister, Ruth H. Layman of Staunton; six grandchildren, Ian Randall Bryant, Robert Andrew Bryant, William Long Bryant, Kelly Ann Bryant, Matthew Cauley Bryant, and Sean Robert Bryant; and a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Staley.
A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday (April 19, 2004) in Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church, Steeles Tavern, by the Rev. M. Kerry Foster. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Robert Andrew Bryant, William Long Bryant, Matthew Cauley Bryant, Sean Robert Bryant, Douglas Layman, and Scott Layman.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ian Randall Bryant, Kelly Ann Bryant, Robert K. Huffman III, Deborah L. Will, Frank Johnson, Sarah A. Comer, Michael Johnson, Eric Johnson, Randall Huffman, Sue Anna Orebaugh, Mary Charles Wiseman, Bobbie Jean Frindt, and Harold Heizer.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday (April 18, 2004) in the Henry Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 8, Steeles Tavern, Va. 24476; or to the Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church, 211 Lynchburg Ave., Colonial Heights, Va. 23834.
