      Eldon Emerson Campbell, 90, of Front Royal, VA died Tuesday, August 31, at Greenfield Senior Living in Strasburg, VA.

      Eldon was born October 4, 1919 in Dunmore, WV, the son of Luther Russell and Onie Thompson Campbell.

      Eldon is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law Stuart R. and Lisa (Myers) Campbell of Chapel Hill, NC and David E. and Lori (Shuman) Campbell of Cary, NC., his daughter and son-in-law V. Kate and Richard \"Rick\" Sowers of Toms Brook, VA; his grandchildren Megan and Allison Sowers of Strasburg, VA, Ethan Sowers of Toms Brook, VA and Bryan and Matthew Campbell of Chapel Hill, NC; a sister Marilee (Campbell) Cyrus of S. Charleston, WV; a sister-in-law Valerie Bain of Canada; brothers-in-law David (Ellen) Stewart Tate of Check, VA; Jim Bain of Canada and their families; and many cousins.

      He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Mary Helen (Tate) Campbell; his brother-in-law Clarence H. \"Cy\" Cyrus; and his niece Ann L. Cyrus.

      Eldon graduated from Greenbank High School in 1936. He attended Tri State University in Indiana from 1940-43, and 1947 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.

      Eldon served in the Armed Forces beginning in the U.S. Navy from 1936-1940, assigned to the USS Louisville. He then went into the U.S. Army Air Force in 1942-1946, and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in 1943. He joined the Air Force Reserves in 1946 and served as Commander of many squadrons then retired in 1973 as a Colonel. He was a Veteran of World War II.

      Eldon worked at Pet Milk Co., from 1947-53, where he was Plant Engineer. He joined the American Viscose Corp. in Front Royal, VA in 1953 as a Staff Engineer, resigned, and joined General Electric Co. in Waynesboro, VA in 1956 as an Aircraft Control Project Engineer. He returned to American Viscose Corp. in 1958 as Projects and Crafts Engineer, and in 1960 was promoted to Plant Engineer. FMC Corp. bought American Viscose in 1963, and he was promoted to Plant Manager in 1966. He transferred to Nitro, WV in 1973 as their Plant Manager. In 1976 Avtex Fibers bought the FMC-American Viscose Division and he was promoted to Vice President of Rayon Manufacturing responsible for the Front Royal, VA; Nitro, WV; and Aston, PA plants. He moved back to Front Royal in 1977 and retired from Avtex in 1984. In 1985 he formed Eldon E. Campbell, Inc. as a consultant. His Professional Memberships include the Va. Manufacturing Assoc.-Board of Directors; WV Manufacturing Assoc.-Board of Directors; American Institute of Electrical Engineers; and Northern Va. Manufacturing Assoc.

      Eldon joined the Front Royal Rotary Club in 1964, is a Paul Harris Fellow, served as President from 1972-73, and served on many committees. He served in Boy Scouts of America as District Chairperson in Shenrapawa Dist., Board of Directors of Shenandoah Council of VA, and Board of Directors Buckskin Council, WV. Past President and Board of Directors for the Warren Heritage Society; President of the Warren County Sesquicentennial committee in 1986; Chamber of Commerce; Front Royal/Warren Co. United Way; Lung Association; Red Cross; acting Director of Industrial Development Authority in 1994; Member and Chairman of Front Royal/Warren County Airport Commission. Eldon also served on James Madison Univ., Shenandoah Univ., and Lord Fairfax Community College curriculum advisory committees. He served on the Board of Directors for Tri-County OIC, Inc.; was a member of Greenville, TN Rescue Squad; Red Cross instructor; Greenville Lions Club member; and a Mason for over 50 years. Served on Board of Directors, and was Vice-president and Budget Chairman for the Greater Charleston, WV Area United Way.

      The family wishes to thank all of the wonderful people who gave him such great love and care at Greenfield Senior Living in Strasburg; Blue Ridge Hospice; his many doctors, nurses, and caregivers; the staff of Maddox Funeral Home; and his many friends, neighbors, and colleagues.

      The family will receive friends on Friday, Sept. 3, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 4, at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church, Front Royal, with The Rev. Deborah Rutter officiating. Graveside services will be Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Dunmore Cemetery, Dunmore, WV.

      Pallbearers will be Page McCarty, Jay McCarty, Bruce Henson, Bret Hrbek, Doug Bowen, and Patrick Ferris.

      Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Front Royal Rotary Club.
