    • OBITUARY

      Andrew Jackson "Jack" Craddock, 74, of Beckley, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, at a Beckley hospital following an apparent heart attack.

      Born March 27, 1924, at Winding Gulf, he was the son of the late Nathaniel Cleve and Daisy Ellen Flinchum Craddock. Mr. Craddock spent his childhood at Lywinn.

      In the early 1940s he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, entering the U.S. Navy in 1942. A machinist, gunner and navigator, he was in 14 engagements and 21 invasions, among them the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima. He also served in the East China Sea. He was a heavy equipment operator for Westmoreland Coal Company with 30 years of service.

      He was a member of the UMWA Local 6105 at Midway, the Sophia VFW Post 4326 at Midway, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Post 3506 and the Beckley Moose Lodge, Post 1606. He was a member of the Hollywood Missionary Baptist Church and was an avid fisherman.

      He was preceded in death by his first wife, Geneva Wickline Craddock; a daughter, Linda Carroll Craddock; a sister, Toby Cummiford; and two brothers, Darrell and Jerry Wayne Craddock.

      Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Hylton Ward Craddock; two daughters, Pamela Jack Craddock Smallwood of Beckley and Gina Garten and her husband, Larry, of Dandridge, Tenn.; a son, Jerry Wayne Craddock of Beckley; a stepdaughter, Deborah Ward Carter and her husband, James, of Deltona, Fla.; a stepson, Garland R. Ward Jr. and his wife, Jenine, of Beckley; a sister, Joy Arenson of Palmetto, Fla.; three brothers, Donald G. Craddock of Palmetto, Fla., Nathaniel "Buck" Craddock of Ruckersville, Va., and William H. Craddock of Charlottesville, Va.; eight grandchildren, Holly, Paul, Richard, Toby, Andrew, Crystal, Melissa and Joy Lynn; and four great-grandchildren, Terry, Derrick, Lela and Dillon.

      Services will be 11 a.m. Sunday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley with the Rev. Robert Coburn officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, Beckley. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

      Pallbearers will be Mike Bonds, Jim Moran, Willie Adams, Charles Helvey, David Zorns and Chester Smith. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Sophia VFW. Arrangements by Melton Mortuary, Beckley.
