Lubbock Morning Avalanche; Lubbock, Texas; 1 March 1958
Feb. 28?President Eisenhower had an upper molar pulled Friday at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He stayed overnight at the hospital for a checkup Saturday on his recovery from the mild stroke he suffered four months ago. White House Press Secretary James C. Hagerty said the simple 15-minute tooth extraction was ?normal and successful.? The President took a local anesthetic and an hour after the extraction was reading a Western novel in his hospital bed. Hagerty said the Chief Executive split the molar some time ago ?biting on some hard substance.?
The extraction was performed by Col. Robert B. Shira of the Army dental corps, assisted by Lt. Col. Edward H. Stiesmeyer and Maj. Robert D. Youmans. Also in attendance were Brig. Gen. Clarence R. Canby, dental corps chief, and Col. Alfred E. Toye, head of Walter Reed dental service. Standing by were the President?s personal physician, Maj. Gen. How'ard M. Snyder, and Maj. Gen. Leonard W. Heaton, Walter Reed commandant.
