      OBITUARY

Arthur Arnold Hartman Jr., affectionately known to his family as "Corky", died as the result of a massive heart attack on June 27, 2012 in Santa Ana, Calif.

Born to Arthur Arndell Hartman and Bertha Sue Duncan Hartman on Feb. 22, 1928 in Athens, he grew up in the white frame house on State Street. In 1946, he graduated from Athens High School and then attended West Virginia University, receiving his degree in electrical engineering in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army from July 1954 until June 1956 and then relocated to California where he worked as an electrical engineer. His most recent employment began in 1972 with Parker Hannifin Corporation in Irvine, Calif., where he stayed until his retirement in 1992. He returned to Parker part-time shortly after his retirement and faithfully worked on the electronics team supporting legacy programs until his passing. Arthur eventually settled in Santa Ana, Calif. and became a devoted member of the Christian Church of God. Corky was interested in researching natural health principles and flying. At one point, Corky owned his own airplane and flew it back east from California. He delighted his nieces, nephews, and the children of Mount Jackson in Athens with a trip into the heavens. For most of us it was our very first plane ride.

A September memorial service is being planned to take place in Orange County, Calif. Afterward, his remains, accompanied by those of his friend, Bill Elmore, will be placed in the Athens Cemetery with Arthur's parents.

Corky had three siblings, Margaret Hartman Jewell, Raymond Daniel Hartman (both deceased), and William Hartman of Athens, who survives him. Although Arthur had no children of his own, he was much loved by seven nieces and nephews, Charlotte A. Garst, Alice J. Pickett, Charles E. Jewell, Robert N. Jewell, James E. Hartman (deceased), John P. Hartman, and Suzanne H. Dickerson. He is also survived by seven great-nieces, Kelli Bemis, Jennifer Lasater, Heather Jackson, Katherine Gray, Stephanie Scott, Elizabeth Hartman, and Erin Dickerson; three great-nephews, Clay Garst, Charles Jewell Jr., and Michael Hartman; six great-great-nieces, Tessa Garst, Anna Garst, Reilly Jewell, Tecoa Jewell, Bayli Gray, and Lylah Scott; and 12 great-great-nephews, Logan Bemis, Ethan Bemis, Benjamin Jewell, Jace Lasater, Brett Lasater, Kade Jackson, Carter Jackson, Cole Jackson, Bronco Gray, Brigham Gray, Noah Scott and Gabriel Scott.
