He lived a life of consummate generosity and consistent kindness. Dick, as he was better known, was known for his laughter, wit, love of a good joke, attention to detail, dedication, and love of family.
His parents and his sister, Phyllis Jones, preceded him in death. Dick is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Joan Pauline Hale, and his children, daughters, Cara Lynn Spencer of Ft. Mills, WI; and Melissa Hale Sergeant and husband, Joe Sergeant of Miami, FI; sons, Richard D. Hale and wife, Sally Bostic-Hale of Richardson, TX, Robin D. A 23-year Air Force veteran, Dick earned his BA degree from the University of the Philippines while stationed there. He was the youngest Senior Master Sergeant to have achieved the rank of E-9 in the Air Force at that time. After his Air Force retirement, he transitioned to careers in management at Eastern Airlines and Norwegian Cruise Lines before his retirement in 1979.
A memorial service in honor of Dick's life will be held on Thursday May 6, 2004, in the Prayer Chapel of First Evangelical Free Church. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorial donations be made to Hospice-Austin, 4107 Spicewood Springs Rd. Austin, Texas 78759 in Richard Hale's name.
