48th Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment Company F "Holston Foresters"

The 48th participated in many conflicts from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor, then was involved in Early's Shenandoah Valley operations and the Appomattox Campaign.

It was organized with 912 officers and men and had a force of 800 in May, 1862. The unit reported 17 casualties at Cross Keys and Port Republic, 62 at Cedar Mountain, 24 at Second Manassas, 7 at Fredericksburg, and 103 at Chancellorsville. Of the 265 engaged at Gettysburg more than twenty-five percent were disabled. Only 4 officers and 38 men surrendered.

The field officers were Colonels John A. Campbell, Robert H. Dungan, and Thomas S. Garnett; Lieutenant Colonel Oscar White; and Majors James C. Campbell, Wilson Faris, and D. Boston Stewart

The Holston Foresters registered 75 men on 15 June in Washington County. Captain David A. P. Campbell, a farmer in the county, led them to Abingdon on 9 July. As of April 1862 the Holsten Foresters were designated Company F

Died:
During the Civil War, Fort Delaware was a prisoner-of-war camp housing captured Confederates, convicted federal soldiers, local political prisoners as well as privateers. In 1863, the barracks for enlisted prisoners of war was known as the "bull pen," according to Pvt. Henry Robinson Berkeley a Confederate prisoner. Most of the Confederates captured at Gettysburg were imprisoned here.

By August 1863, there were more than 11,000 prisoners on the island; by war?s end, it had held almost 33,000 men. The conditions were decent. Statistically, the overall death rate for prisoners was about 7.6 percent. Half of the total number of deaths occurred during a smallpox epidemic in 1863. Inflammation of the lungs (243 deaths), various forms of diarrhea (315 deaths) and smallpox (272 deaths) were the leading killer amongst the prison population.

"Things here are not quite as bad as I expected to find them. They are, however, bad, hopeless and gloomy enough without any exaggeration," said Pvt. Henry Berkeley. "We went into dinner about three o'clock, which consisted of three hardtack, a small piece of meat (about three bites) and a pint tin cup of bean soup. We only get two light meals a day."

Was her maiden name Tanner or Vipperman? She was the informant on the death certificate for her son Edgar L. Hypes. She gives her maiden name as Virginia Tanner.

George W. Tanner, who married Maggie Hypes, was her brother. Maggie was the sister of Virginia's husband, William W. Hypes.

However on Virginia's death certificate, the informant, Ruby Hypes Cole, got her grandparent's names reversed, as James Vipperman, instead of James Tanner, and Mary Tanner, instead of Mary Vipperman. But her name is listed as Virginia Tanner Hypes, which would be correct with a married woman using her maiden name as her middle name.
