    Immigrated from Raphoe, Donegal, Ireland to Manokin, Somerset County, MD on the ship "Welcome" arriving September 21, 1670. Other sources have him immigrating in 1680.

    SAMUEL Alexander, shown as of Pokomoke, moved to Cecil County and bought lands in the southern part of the country in 1723, called "Sligo" and Alexandria tract. He also bought lands in 1723 for the Presbyterian Church of Bohemia, Cecil Coounty, MD. His will dated 3/29/1727 M.A.G., Voll, p.3. Recorded in Elkton, Cecil Co. Deeds, Vol 4, folio 74. SAMUEL Alexander to MARTIN Alexander tract, "Alexandria", 9/1/1723. Recorded 5/23/1724. Vol. 4, folio 75. SAMUEL Alexander to FRANCIS Alexander tract, "Sligo", 9/21/1723. Recorded 5/23/1724. Vol 5, folio 66, MARTIN Alexander (son of SAMUEL and, wife Mary) gives release to James Wallace, mentions "Sligo", 9/2/1734.     The Rev. Joseph Alexander was the son of Theophilus Alexander, an elder of this church, who lived in Cecil County, on the road running from Cowantown to Kimbleville, just north of where it crosses the telegraph road to Newark. After graduating at Princeton College, and being licensed by New Castle Presbytery, July 31st 1766, he was ordained by Hanover Presbytery, March 4th, 1768, at Buffalo, Guilford County, North Carolina.

    He spent the greater part of his exceedingly useful life teaching and preaching at Bullock's Creek, York District, South Carolina. He was a man of commanding talents, fine education, a very animated, popular preacher, and renowned as a teacher of youth. The degree of Doctor of Divinity was conferred on him by the College of South Carolina, in 1807.

    During the Revolution he was a fearless patriot, and often preached while the men of his church, armed to the teeth, guarded his life. He married a daughter of President Davies, of Princeton College.
