    Obituary of Columbus Alexander Christian.

Source: The Tarkio Avalanche. 16 Sept 1921.

    C. A. Christian, formerly a resident of Tarkio, died suddenly on Wednesday evening, September 7th, just as the interurban car on which he was a passenger pulled into the station at St. Joseph.

Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon, September 10th, at the home of the dead man's sister, Miss. Margaret Christian, north of Tarkio. Rev. J. Jay Cokeley of Centennial Church preached the funeral sermon.

Burial was delayed until the next afternoon, waiting the arrival of a son, James C. Christian, from Mountain Home, Idaho. Rev. Bentley of St. Joseph held prayer services at the home and at the grave at Tarkio Cemetary on Sunday. Among the out-of-town attendants at the funeral, in addition to the relatives, were A. L. McPherson, True Davis, and T. F. McKee of St. Joseph.

Mr. Christian lived in and near Tarkio for more than fifty years of his life and had many relatives and friends throughout the county. He had led an active and useful life and until the illness which eventually caused his death was unusually vigorous for a man of his years. Although the doctors had offered but little hope for his full recovery, his sudden death was a shock to the whole community.

Columbus Alexander Christian was born near Rock Port, Missouri January 3, 1858, son of J. C. H. and Mary Christian. He died at St. Joseph, Missouri, Wednesday, September 7, 1921, aged 63 years, 8 months, and 4 days.

When he was yet a boy, the family moved to the Christian homestead north of Tarkio where C. A. Christian grew to manhood. On September 16, 1878, he was united in marriage to Flora D. Bennett of Summit, Mississippi and to this union nine children were born, all of them now living. They are Ben F. Christian, Pine River, Minnesota; Mrs. Burton E. Wetherell, Carthage, Missouri; James C. Christian, Mountain Home, Idaho; Mrs. Chancey E. Clark, Long Beach, California; George T. Christian, South America; Mrs. Harry Ward, Los Angeles, California; Mrs. Gordon Jones, St. Joseph, Missouri; Harry S. Christian, Tarkio, Missouri; Mrs. Hope Mayfield, St. Joseph, Missouri. Of the twenty one grandchildren, nineteen are still living. Three brothers and a sister also remain to mourn the loss. They are T. T. Christian, Tarkio, Missouri; Jesse E. Christian, Pine River, Minnesota; Creed F. Christian, Newman's Grove, Nebraska; and Margaret M. Christian, Tarkio, Missouri.

Mr. Christian was engaged in farming and stockraising near Tarkio until 1908, where he removed to St. Joseph, Missouri. Mrs. Christian died in 1917, since when he has made his home for the most part in Kansas City and St. Joseph.

Hundreds of people, of three generations in this community, regarded 'Lum' Christian as a real friend. Few men have been held in such high esteem and by so many people for so long a time. The sincerity of his nature and the honesty of his whole life will be remembered always by everyone who called him friend and to all of these his going is a real loss.

    Obituary for Thomas Tate Christian.

    Source: Tarkio Avalanche. 4 May 1923. p.1. col. 1-2.

Funeral services for T. T. Christian, until last summer a resident of this community, were held Tuesday afternoon, May 1st, the remains having arrived in Tarkio Monday morning.

Mr. Christian was born in Atchison County on October 29, 1863 and had lived all his life until last year, when he sold the old homestead four and one-half miles northwest of Tarkio and removed with his family to Monte Vista, Colorado, near which place he engaged again in farming and the raising of fine hogs. An attack of influenza last fall considerably weakened his physical condition, and a later attack of intestinal influenza resulted in his death after an illness of about a week.

He had an unusually wide acquaintance throughout Atchison County and an enviable number of friends to whom his unfailing good humor and jovial disposition typified the character of this man. Possessed of definite convictions on any subject in which he was interested and a willingness to express them on occasion, he was always a force for good in any worthwhile community project. He served as a member of the Council of Defense during the World War and gave much of his time in the interest of good roads, serving as Road Supervisor of his district for many years.

To the scores of Atchison County folks who were his friends, the news of his going was real cause for sadness, introducing as it did upon their rememberance of him as a vigorous, active personage in the life of the community during all the years of his residence here. The esteem and affection in which he was universally held was witnessed by the many floral tributes which banked the altar of the Church, draped the bier, and make beautiful the last resting place in the Home Cemetary. That he was held in the same esteem in the Colorado home was evidenced by the many flowers sent with the body by friends there and by the large audience at the short funeral service held there before bringing the remains to Tarkio.

It was typical of the man and in accordance with his wishes that the friends remain at the cemetary until the grave had been filled and the mound covered with evergreens and flowers for he had never been willing to leave those last rites to be performed for his own friends by strangers.

Following a short prayer service at the home of Mr. Christian's life long friend and neighbor, H. R. Prather, where the body was taken in its arrival here, the casket was removed to the Presbyterian Church where the funeral services were conducted by Dr. J. A. Thompson, assisted by Rev. C. W. Halsey. The church auditorium and the Sunday school rooms were filled by those seeking to do honor to the memory of one whom they had known and respected. The pallbearers, all friends and business associates, were J. E. Travis, E. N. Raines, F. S. Travis, H. R. Prather, James McCollister, and W. L. Salmon. A quartette composed of Mrs. B.O. Dobler, Mrs. C.E. Munn, Glenn Crosen, and Henry Hey sang, "O Love That Will Not Let Me Go" and "Thy Will Be Done". Mr. Hey sang, "The Lord is my Shepherd", an arrangement of the 23rd Psalm.

Thomas Tate Christian was born October 29th, 1863 in Atchison County. He died April 27th, 1923 near Monte Vista, Colorado. He was a student in Tarkio College during its first year, 1883-1884. He married Nellie A. Robertson of Tarkio on November 30th, 1892. Into the home came two children, Helen, now Mrs. Kyle Peterson of Unionville, Missouri and Thomas Ralph, who had been in the Colorado home with his parents. In addition to his wife and two children, Mr. Christian left behind two little grandsons, the children of his daughter, two brothers, C.F. Christian, of Newman's Grove, Nebraska and J.E. of Pine River, Minnesota and one sister, Margaret, in Tarkio.

While still young, Mr. Christian united with the First Presbyterian Church of Tarkio and continued in its active membership for thirty-five years.

It was the regret of Mr. Christian's life that he did not remain in college in accordance with his father's expressed desire to complete the course of studies. His daughter fulfilled her father's desire but the son was prevented as so many other young men by the part he was called upon by the World War.

Mr. Christian's life was in the home and with his neighbors. In his home, he was always distinguished for the love and kindness which he radiated. His children say they have no memory of an unkind work spoken in the home. His neighbors are here to indicate their appreciation of what he was to them. Little children were his dearest friends. A young girl who had known him as Uncle Tom from babyhood said when she heard of his death, "I have lost the best friend I ever had."
