OBITUARY

George E. Altizer, lifelong resident of Tazewell County, died last Friday in St Lukes Hospital in Bluefield. he had lived for the past three years with a daughter, Mrs. Charles Nichols of Bluefield.

Funeral services were held at Tazewell Christian Church Monday afternoon with the Rev. M.E.N. Lindsey in charge, assisted by the Rev. Eugene May of Bluefield. Interment was in Maplewood Cemetery in North Tazewell.

He was preceded in death by his wife and by a son, Charles E. Altizer, who was killed during WW II and by one sister.
He is survived by five other daughters; Mrs. Walter Witt of Medicine Park, Okla., Mrs. Gratton Lambert of Amonate, Mrs. Charles Suiter of Salem, Mrs. John Lockhart of Bluefield, and Mrs. William Strickland of Northfolk, Va.; two sons, Hoyt A. Altizer and Henry F. Altizer of North Tazewell; two brothers, D.W. (Doc) Altizer of Honaker and Robert Altizer of Charolettesville, Va., one sister, Mrs. John M. Hankins of Richlands.

OBITUARY

Roanoke Times; 23 Dec 2008

Ruby Altizer Suiter, 97, of Salem, Va., died on Monday, December 22, 2008 at South Roanoke Nursing Home after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease.

She attended State Teachers School (now Radford University) and in 1932 began a 35 year career in a one room school house in Tazewell, Va. After becoming a long time resident of Salem, Ruby retired from Broad Street Elementary School, Salem, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Charles T. Suiter. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ruth and James Francis; son and daughter-in-law, Charles G. and Sylvia Renick Suiter; grandchildren, Laura Francis, Stephen and wife, Jeanie Francis, and Jennifer and husband, Frank Giannini; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at Sherwood Memorial Park, Abbey Chapel, conducted by the Reverend W. W. Huff, a longtime family friend.

Irene A. Nichols

BLUEFIELD ? Irene A. Nichols, 97, of 1109 Heatherwood Road, and previously of 617 Parkway, Bluefield, WV, died Feb. 18, 2012 at The Maples Health Care. She was born Aug. 4, 1914 in Cliffield, Va. and lived in Bluefield since 1930.

She was the daughter of George Elbert and Bertie Patton Altizer. She graduated from Beaver High School and was a very active member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Bluefield since 1933. She served as Deacon and several terms as Elder; at the time of death, she was an Elder Emeritus. She was active in the Christian Women's Fellowship of the church, serving as vice president and five two-year terms as president. She was also very active in the WV Region of Christian Churches and C.W.F., serving on the cabinet of Christian Women's Fellowship as vice president for four years and president for four years. She served several terms as a member of the WV Regional Board and was a delegate many times to the General Assembly of the Christian Church of the U.S. and Canada.

She was a member of the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary, the Pink Dogwood Garden Club and a charter member of the Bluefield Regional Medical Center Volunteer Service, having served more than 20 years. She was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Bluefield Civic League, the Ladies Auxiliary of Bluefield and the Cumberland Heights Lioness Club.

Other than her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Charles H. Nichols; an infant son, David Earl Nichols; three brothers, Hoyt A. Altizer, Master Sergeant Charles E. Altizer, and Henry F. Altizer; four sisters, Ruth Whitt, Ella Lambert, Ruby Suiter, and Helen Lockhart.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Ronald Nichols of Atlanta, Ga. and Daniel Gordon Nichols of Bluefield; one sister, Jean Strickland and her husband, Bill Strickland of Suffolk, Va.; one sister-in-law, Edith Altizer of Fort Wayne, Ind.; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Bluefield with the Reverend Aaron Watkins officiating. Entombment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell. A luncheon for friends and family members will be served at the church afterwards. Friends may call at Mercer Funeral Home from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012.

TAZEWELL, Va. Henry F. Altizer, age 91, of Tazewell, Va., died Friday, November 5, 2010 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield, W.Va. Born February 13, 1919 at Cliffield, Va., he was a son of the late George Elbert Altizer and Bertie Patton Altizer. He was a member of the Tazewell Christian Church and the Christian Men's Fellowship. Mr. Altizer was a U.S. Army Air Force Veteran of World War II and was a life member of the Barns Beavers VFW Post # 7136 of Tazewell, Va. He was a retired coal miner and member of the UMWA Local # 2322 at Amonate. He also worked for a time at the Pocahontas Shop. He was a former member of the North Tazewell Lions Club and the Tazewell Moose Lodge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Ruth Witt, Ruby Suiter, Ella Lambert, and Helen Lockhart; two brothers, Hoyt Altizer and Charles Altizer.

He is survived by his wife, Edith Griffin Altizer; two sons, David Altizer and wife, Lori of Fort Wayne, Ind. and Eddie Altizer and wife, Sharon of Mechanicsville, Va.; two sisters, Irene Nichols of Bluefield, W.Va. and Jean Strickland of Suffolk, Va.; six grandchildren, Sarah Altizer, Matthew Altizer, Chuck Altizer, Lonnie Altizer, Stephen Altizer, and James Henry Altizer; three great-grandchildren, Grayson Altizer, Bailey Altizer, and Xavier Altizer; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 8, 2010 at the Tazewell Christian Church in Tazewell, Va. with the Reverend Michael Stump officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va. where military graveside rites will be conducted by members of the Barns Beavers VFW Post # 7136 of Tazewell, Va. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell, Va. from 6-8 p.m., Sunday, November 7, 2010.
