Lucy Elizabeth "Lizzie" Handy, 87, of Cherry Creek Rd., Meadows of Dan, died Thursday, January 4, 2001 at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Patrick County on May 8, 1913, and was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Prince Annis Vipperman Hensley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harry Franklin Handy; two sons, Claude Handy and Clyde "Pete" Handy; two sisters, Laurie Justice and Lottie McBride; a brother, John Hensley; a half-brother, Lawrence "Dude" Hensley; and two grandchildren.

Surviving are three daughters, Beatrice Pack of Stuart, Essie Lawless of Stuart and Bessie Martin of Bassett; two half-sisters, Goldie Young of Meadows of Dan and Ruth Williams of Mount Airy, N.C.; three half-brothers, Harrison Hensley of Claudville and Burton Hensley and William Hensley, both of Mount Airy; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grand children.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart.

The Revs. J.R. Shelton and Bernard Handy officiated. Burial was in the New Dan River Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers Roy Pendleton, Lloyd Pack, Bill Whitlow, Ricky Handy, Tim Pack and Ronnie Handy.

Gracie Vipperman East, 82, of Vipperman Avenue, Stuart, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center.
She was born Sept. 4, 1925, in Patrick County to Noah Vipperman and Tildie Pack Vipperman.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Sam Junior East; two sisters, Mindy Hiatt and Elsie Queen; and five brothers, Elzie Vipperman, John Vipperman, Jim Vipperman, Joe Vipperman and William Vipperman.

She retired from R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in the housekeeping department and was a member of Patrick Springs Church of God of Prophecy.

Surviving are her husband, Sam East of the home; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Abiding Grace Church with Pastors Dale Bailey, Jim Vipperman and J.R. Vipperman officiating. Burial will be in the Hooker family cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. today at the church.

Moody Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

William Claude Vipperman, 77, of 1110 Newsome St., Mt. Airy, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at Surry Community Nursing Center.

He was born on May 22, 1927, to Noah and Matilda Pack Vipperman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mindy Hiatt and Elsie Queen, and four brothers, James Vipperman, Elzie Vipperman, Joe Vipperman and John Vipperman.

He retired from Mosley and Reece Inc.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Tolbert Murray Vipperman of the home; four daughters, Frances East of Stuart, Va., Kathy Gunter and Judy Murray, both of Mt. Airy, and Debbie Brackins of Johnson City, Tenn.; four sons, Charles Murray Jr. of Mt. Airy, Billy Murray of Pilot Mountain, Kyle Murray of Lewisville and Kennith Murray of Winston-Salem; a sister, Gracie East of Stuart; fifteen grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Mt. Airy. The Revs. Jim Vipperman and Gene Puckett will officiate. Burial will be in the Hooker Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy.

Margie Ola Bowman Herndon, born January 5, 1918, died peacefully in her home in North Garden, Virginia, on Tuesday, August 25, 2009, surrounded by family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wharton Cole Herndon; a son, Randall Cole Herndon; five brothers; and two sisters.

She is survived by a sister, Ruby Hale and her husband, Jimmy, of Pratts, Virginia; a daughter, Karen Faye Davis and her husband, Wayne, of North Garden, Virginia; a son, James M. Herndon and his wife, Juanita, of Fluvanna, Virginia; a daughter-in-law, Tana B. Herndon of Charlottesville, Virginia; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Margie was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church in North Garden, Virginia. She will be missed by all.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, August, 29, 2009, at Mooreland Cemetery with the Reverend Ronnie Morris officiating.
