William "Bill" Thomas Johnson of 606 Briarwood Drive, passed away early Wednesday morning, May 19, 2010. A funeral service will be held at 1 PM on Friday, May 21, at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Ridgeview Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Johnson was born April 24, 1929 in Buckingham, VA, son of the late William Bransford and Ruby Rebecca Jones Johnson. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Eden and the retired vice-president of Solite Corporation.
Mr. Johnson was civically active as a member of The Lions Club as well as a Mason with Stonewall Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. #200 for over 50 years.

Surviving are his four children, Bill Johnson and wife, Mary of Norwood, Tommy Johnson, Joy Conner and husband, George, and Jennifer Boyte and husband, Darrell, all of Eden; six grandchildren, Kendall Priest of Winston-Salem, Eric Johnson of Greensboro, Caitlyn Boyte of Winston-Salem, Hunter Boyte of Eden, Jenny Conner of Greensboro, and Megan Conner of Nashville, TN; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Boatwright Johnson.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service (12 noon to 1 pm) at Fair Funeral Home and other times they will gather at the home of his daughter, Jennifer Boyte, 435 Greenway Drive in Eden. Memorial contributions may be made to Morehead Memorial Hospital Foundation, 117 E. Kings Hwy, Eden, NC 27288; or to Rockingham County Humane Society, 205 Boone Road, Eden, NC 27288.

Carolyn (Putney) Dunbar Goodloe, 85, of Cabot, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2008, at Concordia Lutheran Ministries.

Born Sept. 2, 1923, in Buckingham County, VA, she was the daughter of W. L. and Nannie Nuckols Putney. She was the owner of Friendly Shop Antiques in Richmond, Va. She enjoyed reading, antiquing and discussing history and politics.

Surviving are her daughter, Rebecca (David Swenson) Dunbar, of Butler; her grandson, Daniel Swenson, of Butler; her two sisters, Winfrey Russell, of Buckingham, VA, and Nancy Thompson, of Richmond, VA; and her brother, Houston Putney, of Arizona. Preceding her in death were her parents; her first husband, Wesley Dunbar, in 1974; her second husband, Charles Goodloe, in 1990; and a brother, Reid Putney. Private burial will be in Buckingham Baptist Church Cemetery, Buckingham County, Va.

Reid Putney

An organic farmer and founder of Countryside Natural Products Inc. in Fishersville, Reid Taylor Putney, 80, of Waynesboro and formerly of Rockbridge County died Tuesday, April 1, 2008.

He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and was a graduate of Michigan State University with a degree in forestry. He then founded Dover Forestry Co. and worked as a consultant for 15 years. He had been an organic farmer in Bedford and Rockbridge counties for 30 years. He founded Countryside Natural Products in 1997 and was active in the Virginia Biological Farmers Association and the Virginia Independent Consumers and Farmers Association.

He was also active in the Virginia Conservative Party and was a candidate for lieutenant governor in 1964. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Staunton and was a Gideon.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Laine Putney; three sons, Reid Taylor Putney of Dayton Ohio, Stephen Barrett Putney of Lynchburg and Douglas Laine Putney of Dayton, Va.; three sisters; one brother; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted Friday, April 4, at Calvary Baptist Church in Staunton by the Rev. Randy Spencer and the Rev. Stephen B. Putney. Burial was in Augusta Memorial Park in Fishersville.
