Passes Sunday
Following Illness
Benjamin Franklin Ward, Sr.
85, retired Pulaski businessman,
died early Sunday at Pulaski hospital
following a two weeks' illness.
Mr. Ward was one of Pulaski's
first merchants and resided at his store
building at the corner of Dora Highway and Washington Avenue.
Survivors include several children and grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements will not be completed until the arrival of relatives.

OBITUARY

Ashland Daily Independent; 14 Feb 2003

Daniel Glen Blevins, 88, of Louisa, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2003, in King's Daughters Medical Center following an extended illness.

Mr. Blevins was born September 11, 1914, in Lawrence County, Ky., a son of the late Daniel H. and Victoria Ward Blevins. He was a retired dairy famer and a cattleman on a farm recently recognized by the Louisa Rotary Club as one of the oldest family farms in Lawrence County. He was a member of the Garrett Chapel Methodist Church, where he had served as Sunday School Superintendent and lay speaker.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Marlin Blevins, and a sister, Ruby Cordle. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Bertha Mae Pennington Blevins; one son, Daniel H. Blevins and his wife Marsha of Ashland, Ky.; two daughters, Glenna Young and her husband Max of Lexington, Ky., and Karen Walters and her husband Bill of Catlettsburg, Ky.; three grandchildren, Vikki Franklin of Lexington, Ky., Dr. Marshall Glen Blevins of Ashland, Ky., and Allison Blevins of Lexington, Ky.; and three great-grandchildren Curtis and Ella Glynn Franklin and Leah Kathryn Blevins.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at 2 pm, message to be delivered by Frank Wallace, assisted by Keith Crum and Stan Williams, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg. Entombment will follow at Rose Hill Mausoleum.

Friends may call Saturday from 12:30 to 2 pm at the funeral home. BLUEFIELD ? Myrtle Mae Ward Altizer, born at Bearwallow, Va. on Feb. 3, 1913, departed this earthly life at the age of 98 and went to her eternal home to be with Jesus on Dec. 8, 2011.

Myrtle Altizer was the daughter of the late James and Carlie Wyatt Ward. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dr. Henley Altizer; a sister, Minnie; three brothers, Preston, Paul and Hassel Ward.

She is survived by two sons, Elmo and Delano Altizer and his wife Jean; brother, James Ward II, Bluefield, Va.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Myrtle Altizer resided in Richlands, Va., Radford, Va., Sevierville, Tenn., and Ft. Wayne, Ind., where she was employed with the International Harvester for five years.

She was of the Pentecostal faith and always enjoyed Sunday school and church. She always had great admiration for Pastor Danny Scott and wife Glenda. She was a member of the Bluefield Church of God, Bluefield, W.Va. She had innumerable friends who loved her. There was never a more devoted mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She had much love for animals. Her pet cat, "Charlie," was much enjoyment to her in later years. Myrtle loved shopping at Grant's Supermarket. She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking and making breads, especially dinner rolls. She loved gardening and preserving foods. She liked to share goods with others.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, Va. with the Reverend Michael G. York, the Reverend James Coe Sr., and the Reverend Danny Scott officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be family members

Friends may visit with the family today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church of God, 3401 E. Cumberland Rd., Bluefield, WV 24701.

BLUEFIELD, VA ? The journey of this earthly life was completed for James Thomas Ward II on July 26, 2013 at the age of 88. He breathed his last breath here and his first breath there when he was escorted by Jesus to his heavenly home to be reunited with his loved ones and friends and to worship Jesus throughout eternity.

James Ward II was born at Bearwallow, VA on February 13, 1925. He was the son of the late James Ward I and Carlie Wyatt Ward. Besides his parents, James II was preceded in death by his beautiful wife Linda Ruth Belcher Ward. His brothers; Paull (wife Carmie); Preston (wife Jettie); and Hassel Ward. Sisters; Minnie Ward (infant) and Myrtle Mae Ward Altizer.

Surviving to carry on his love, loyalty and passion for life are his son Randall and wife Margot and grandsons Joshua and Caleb and granddaughter Anastasia Ruth Ward. James was the last surviving member of the immediate family.

He was blessed with special nieces, nephews and cousins; also his church family and thoughtful and helpful nearby neighbors. Special caretakers; Bill Earls and Mike Brewster.

The celebration of life for James will be held Sunday, August 4, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. at the Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel, 450 Courthouse Road, Princeton, WV. Friends may visit with the family from 2-3 p.m. at the Funeral Home Chapel. The minister officiating is Brother Danny Scott. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Donations may be made to True Vine Fellowship, 148 Altar Rd., Bluefield, WV 24701.

Notes:

Died from a bullet wound inflicted by Bliss Altizer during a card game. Joan Banner, a daughter of Celia, said that Tom drew on Bliss, but the bullet hit the holster so Bliss then fired at Tom, mortally wounding him. Tom as taken by the other participants into a field of cut corn, propped him up against cornshucks, unconscious and bleeding. The nex morning he was found dead. He is buried in the Whitaker Cemetery on Whitaker Ridge.

16 Dec 1921 Clinch Valley News
Tom SHORT, a well known citizen of the Whitaker Ridge Community, was shot and killed Saturday afternoon last about 2 o'clock, on "Grassy Spur" by Bliss ALTIZER, who is also well known in that community. The shooting, according to information reaching this office, was the result of a poker game, in which the men had been engaged prior to the shooting. At the conclusion of the game the men separated, going in opposite directions, when without warning, SHORT shot ALTIZER with a pistol, the bullet penetrating his body. ALTIZER immediately turned and emptied a load load of bird shot into SHORT'S body, inflicting a wound from which he died a short time afterwards. ALTIZER was given a preliminary hearing, Magistrate HEAVERS, presiding, and released on a $1,000 bond for appearance here in court. From the information we have received it appears the shooting of SHORT was justifiable. SHORT is survived by a wife and one child, and was about 25 years old. He served five years in the US Army.

OBITUARY

Donald Hugh Altizer, 72, of War, died, Friday, March 30, 2012 at his residence. Born May 28, 1939, in War, he was the son of the late John W. Altizer and Rosinel McCoy Altizer. Donald spent his entire life in War, having drove a truck for an oil company and worked for several garages as a mechanic. In his spare time following retirement, he enjoyed rebuilding and restoring engines of all types. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in War.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings; Virginia Dare Smallwood, John, Tommy and Bill Altizer.

He will be lovingly remembered by his three sisters, Evelyn Necessary and husband, Kenneth of Tannersville, Va., Shelva Ruszin and husband, Bill of Pasadena California, Frances Galante of Tampa, Fla.; a host of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 17, 2012 in the Mausoleum Chapel of Grandview Memory Gardens on the Bluefield-Tazewell Road near Bluefield, Va.

Those wishing to attend are requested to meet at the cemetery on Tuesday.

The Altizer Family is being served by the Memorial Funeral Directory & Cremation Center on the Athens Road in Princeton.
