Lydia Skaggs was a sister to the famous "Long Hunter" Henry Skaggs. They had other brothers who were noted "Long Hunters", also. Again, we don't know who the parents were of these hardy, adventurous men and women. This writer leans toward the idea that James and Rachel Skaggs of Montgomery County, VA may well have been the parents.

Deposition of WILLIAM RATLIFF (27 April 1836 at the home of WILLIAM SKAGGS, Aleck Fork of Pitman Creek). I was acquainted with MOSES SKAGGS of Green County, KY. He had 4 sisters, to wit: SUSANNAH, wife of RICHARD WHIT; LYDIA, wife of MATTHIAS HARMON, ELIZABETH "Betsy," wife of JOHN HANKINS; and NANCY, wife of WILLIAM MERIDY. I was quite intimate with them in Virginia. I knew them before they married. MOSES had a brother named JOHN SKAGGS. . . I knew the brothers of MOSES SKAGGS. They were HENRY, JAMES, CHARLES, JOHN, RICHARD and JACOB SKAGGS. I knew them in Kentucky and they all raised large families.

Deposition of FRANCES SAMPLES (27 April 1836). I was familiar with MOSES SKAGGS who died in Green County about 40 years ago. He had 4 sisters, to wit: SUSANNAH, wife of RICHARD WHIT; LYDIA, wife of MATTHIAS HARMAN; ELIZABETH, wife of JOHN HANKINS, and NANCY, wife of WILLIAM MERIDY. They lived in Virginia. When I knew them, MOSES had 6 brothers: HENRY, JOHN, JAMES, CHARLES, RICHARD and JACOB.

To the General Assembly of Virginia: The undersigned petitioner Matthias Harman a citizen of the county of Tazewell would beg leave to respectfully represent to the Legislature of Virginia that in August 1829 he intermarried with a certain Nancy Vance by whom he had three children prior to the marriage, for reasons which is deemed unimportant here to state he had been restricted from marrying said Nancy and that as soon as the restrictions alluded to was removed he done that he had always intended to do. Your petitioner requests that a law may be passed changing the names of his three children born out of wedlock from that of Vance to Harman, the eldest Elias V., the second Daniel H., and the third William Buse, and he also desires that the said three children may be made by law his legal representatives if deemed proper and your petitioner as in duty bound will every pray. NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE DISCOUNTED

His grandchild Sallie Christian, daughter of John Christian and Clemmie Harman, applied to the Eastern Cherokee in 1908. Application #10464. In her application she spells his name "Mose." Her application was rejected.

Since so much has been written about Moses' father, Thomas Bailey Christan, having Native American heritage, which has NOT been borne out by Y-DNA results or autosomal DNA results by any of his descendants.

The Guion Miller Roll is a list of Eastern Cherokee Indians who applied for compensation because of a 1906 lawsuit, and judgment in the tribe's favor in the United States Court of Claims on May 28, 1906, for them. This resulted in the appropriation of $1 million to the Tribe's eligible individuals and families. Newspapers were full of announcements that the Cherokees and/or Cherokee heirs would be receiving money anywhere from $5,000,000 to $11,000,000. Many times it was not made clear this was money for nearly the entire tribe but instead gave the impression that it was for specific families.

To be approved for funds the individual must have:
1. Been alive as of May 28, 1906
2. Established that he/she was a member or descendants of a person that had been included in the forced removal to Indian Territory, known as the Ross Party.
3. Not been affiliated with a tribe other than the Cherokee
4. Been members of the Eastern Cherokee tribe at the time of the treaties of 1835,1836, and 1845 between the United States and Eastern Cherokee.

There were 45,857 applications filed for about 900,000 claimants. 30,254 of those claimants were entitled to share in the funds. This means nearly 2/3 of all claimants were NOT entitled and therefore rejected.

A common assumption of those who descend from people who were rejected on the Miller Roll is that their ancestors were Cherokee, but they just couldn't prove it at that time. These families were usually always listed as white in vital records and were never listed in the Cherokee records or on any Cherokee rolls. They simply had no documentation or proof.

People applied for the Miller Roll who had never heard they were Cherokee before the money or land topic came up. They were suddenly informed by someone that they were Cherokee or related to a specific family and should apply. There were families who had heard they were Indian or "kin" to them, so they applied even though they had never heard what tribe of Indians they might be "kin" to. There were people who were notified by "claim agents" and lawyers that they were entitled to lots of money so they applied. There were people who were told they would be receiving both land and money, so they applied. There were people who applied because they thought they were enrolling in the Eastern Cherokee tribe and then would be entitled to land and money.

Many of the rejected claimants, for one reason or another, filed a claim believing they were going to come into money. One has to be careful of not basing claim to Cherokee ancestry based on a rejected claim from the Miller Roll. Though these applications often offer a lot of genealogical information, they don't necessarily offer any proof of Cherokee ancestry.

I Moses Christian, a man of lawful age and sound memory calling to mind the mortality of all earthly things, and that (Illegible) any goeth to his long home, therefore have determined to (Illegible) a disposition of all my property in accordance with my own will and pleasure; and do herby make and constitute this my last will and testament to wit:

Article 1st I will and bequeath to my sons Mastin the farm on which I now live an bonded do follows Beginning at two Sugar trees and a white oak on the line between Jacob Hinkle and myself, thence running to a corner tree of the line (illegible) purchased, thence crossing Indian Creek in a Northwardly direction to a sapling on the north lawn of said creek and with the (illegible) of the creek to a Hickory, thence crossing a point to said line again, and with said line about one quarter of a mile to a corner, thence a westwardly course to the top of creek ridge to Samuel Christian line and with is line to a high nob on said Ridge,thence now with the top of the ridge to a black oak corner tree near the mouth of Lawree thence running with a line of a survey of 149 acres to the beginning.

Provided, However that Mastin is to take care of and maintain his mother, in a decent and satisfactory manner. Now if my son Mastin shall fail to support his mother and turns out to be an undutiful and wasteful boy then the land shall go to my wife for her support and at her death shall be divided equally between my other children except my daughter Shone.

Article 2nd. I will and bequeath to my son John the farm on which my son Thomas now lives and known as the Warren farm.

Article 3rd I will and bequeath to my son Samuel one hundred acres more or less lying on the west side of Laurie Creek and adjoin the and on which he now lives.

Article 4th I wil and bequeath to my son Thomas and Alexander and my daughter Louisa Law Eight hundred and eighty eight acres of land to be divided equally between them by drawing of lots if they cannot divide it otherwise.

Article 5th I will and bequeath to my wife two horses (Sam & Nell) six milk cows and choice of ten sheep out of my flock; and all my house hold and kitchen furniture so long as she lives, also my plows, hoe, axe, and gearing for two horses.

Article 6th I will and bequeath all the remainder of my personal property to be sold on twelve months credit and my just debts to be paid cut of the proceeds, and the remainder, if any there be, to be paid over to my wife for her support.

Article 7th I will and bequeath to my daughter Shone one dollar to be paid her at the death of her mother and not one cent more and lastly I appoint and constitute H R Bogle my executor whereunto I have set my name and affirmed my name this 7th day of May 1855.

On reflection I have seen proper to amend this codicil to my will , in which, I will and bequeath to my son Mastin all my blacksmith tools, for the benefits of the farm and not to be sold off the farm, also I will to my son Mastin my rifle gun and to my son John the rifle gun I gave him some time ago. I also reserve to my son Mastin so long as he remains my dutiful son the privilege of getting stone tools (for his own use) on any of the lands willed in this my last will and testament to my sons Thomas, Alexander, Samuel & John and also the land willed to my daughter Louisa Low. Some researchers speculated he died without issue as had no heirs listed in Christian lawsuit after Thomas Bailey Christian died. However it is possible he had moved into Cherokee territory at this point and may not have wanted to be part of the lawsuit.

In a hillside cemetery overlooking the site of the old Reed homestead on Crane Creek in McDowell Co., WVA are the graves of John Wesley Reed, Sr and his wife Nancy (nee Christian) Reed. The tomstones at these graves are still legible and reveal the following vital data: "J. W. Reed, Sr., born at Rogersville, Tennessee, July 25, 1804, died June 18, 1888; Nancy, wife of J. W. Reed, born October 18, 1812, died December 2, 1887."

MILITARY SERVICE

Addison B. Christian, 2nd Lt., Co. B, 34th Battallion, VA Cavalry, was killed in skirmish at Bunker Hill, Berkeley County, (W)VA June 14, 1863. The 34th was on the way to Gettysburg. They encountered Union forces in a
barricaded house in Bunker Hill. The 34th captured 75-100 Union soldiers at the cost of the life of Addison Christian.

Three Deaths in One Family

Three members of one family passed away in one week at the home of Elijah Barnett on the head of Dry Fork. On Wednesday of last week his sister, Miss Barnett, died aged 89, and on Saturday his wife. Shown Barnett, passed away aped 76, and on Monday of this week Mr. Barnett joined the loved ones, he being in his 84th year. All the deaths were due to the infirmities of old age.

The Barnetts were raised on Dry Fork, in West Virginia, near where Yukon is now located. Several years ago they sold their property to the Yukon Coal Company and moved to the Barker farm in this county where they have since resided, and all three were buried in the family burying ground on their present home place.

THREE DEATHS IN ONE FAMILY

Last Monday Elijah Barnett died at his home oh Dry Fork, aged 83 years. The Saturday before, his wife, 76 years old, was buried. A few days before, in the same week, his maiden sister, Sallie, who lived with him, died, aged 89 years. Mr. Barnett and his wife died of pneumonia, and the sister may also have had the same disease. The deaths of these aged people occurring in the same house within a weeks time, is a remarkable coincidence. We recall no similar occurrence. Mr. Barnett came to this county from West Virginia about a year ago. A few days ago he was in town, and called at this office, appearing in good health and reasonably active for a man of his years.
