According to his obituary in the Bluefield Daily Telegraph 20 Jan 1938, he was injured in the Bishop mines by a slate fall 8 Sep 1937 severely injuring his leg with multiple fractures. A month later infection developed in the bone caused a septic situation which persisted until his death.

James B. Whittaker

PAX - James B. Whittaker, 96, of Pax died July 15, 1999, in Appalachian Regional Hospital, Beckley, after a long illness.

He was a retired miner with 391/2 years' service. He was a retired minister, having served in Coal City and Fireco, and a member of UMW and Wierwood Community Church.

Surviving: wife, Mabel Frye Humphrey Whittaker; son, Roy of Tennessee; daughters, Willie Crownover of Maryland, Frieda Adkins of Whitby; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Rose & Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley, with the Rev. Tom Lilly and the Rev. Kenny Hayes officiating. Burial will be in Pax Community Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

For over a year Douglas fought in Europe including the Battle of the Bulge against the Germans in the largest land battle on the Western Front during World War II and the largest engagement ever fought by the U.S. Army.

On Saturday, January 13,1945 following the Malmedy massacre (a war crime in which 80 American POW's were murdered by their German captors) and according to the U.S. World War II Registry, Douglas was killed in action when his unit, the 30th Army Division, 119th Infantry, was sent to recapture the area around Baugnez in order to reclaim the bodies of the murdered soldiers. He died in the Malmedy-Stavelot area as the Allies pushed Germany out of occupied territory on the way to Berlin to end the war in Europe that year. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart with a bronze oak leaf cluster.

At the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery and Memorial in Belgium, covering 57 acres, rest 7,992 of our military dead, most of whom lost their lives during the advance of the U.S. armed forces into Germany. GENERAL ORDERS WAR DEPARTMENT No. 11 Washington 25, D. C., 30 January 1946 22.COMPANY C 83D CHEMICAL MORTAR BATTALION, is cited for outstanding performance of duty in action against the enemy from 10 to 27, September 1943, near Chiunzi Pass, Italy. This company landed at Maori, Italy, with the Ranger Force on the night of September 8 and 9, 1943, with the mission of seizing the high ground controlling Chiunzi Pass and of securing the left flank of the Fifth Army. The holding of this position was vital for flank security, for observation on the plains of Naples, and for observation on German supply routes and communication lines to the Salerno battlefront. During this period, Company C exhibited unusual gallantry and determination in manhandling mortars and supplies to mountain tops. The men worked continuously, night and day, keeping the unit supplied. Mortar crews were cut down to one and two men per gun, and the remaining men fought with the Rangers and went on combat patrols. Subjected to almost continuous mortar and artillery fire, and repeatedly attacked by a determined, numerically superior enemy, Company C maintained extremely heavy fire and filled in all gaps in the Ranger line. Company C men fought side by side with the Rangers, using their automatic weapons and grenades with devastating effect. Company C mortar fire was of necessity brought to within 50 yards of friendly units as seven major counterattacks were repelled during the period, and numerous enemy patrols were stopped, often in bitter, close-in fighting. Company C's mortars kept the German Army supply route under continuous effective fire, although the supply route was 2,000 yards beyond the authorized range. The men and oficers of Company C, 83d Chemical Mortar Battalion, displayed extraordinary determination in supplying their mortars, which were at the top of the mountain, with ammunition and spare mortar parts. Despite limited food and water supplies and the continuous nature of enemy fire and activity, this company maintained its courage and determination throughout an extended onslaught by an enemy determined to wipe out its positions and made possible the successful accomplishment of a vital mission. {General Orders 647, Headquarters Seventh Army, Western Military District, 16 November 1945, as approved by the commanding General, United States Army Forces, European Theater {main}.

OBITUARY

NEWHALL Ernest (Ernie) Whitaker, age 91, of Newhall, W.Va., died Thursday, July 29, 2010 at Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell, Va. Born April 27, 1919 at Big Creek, W.Va., he was a son of the late Mike Whitaker and Fannie Dillion Whitaker.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was awarded the Silver Star in August of 1945. He served in Luzon, Northern Solomons and also received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars; the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star and the Good Conduct Ribbon.

He was a retired coal miner from Consolidation Coal Company with over forty years of service at Berwind, Newhall #6, and Jenkinjones mines where he retired in 1981. Mr. Whitaker was a member of the UMWA, District 29, Local #7173 for sixty-five years.

After retirement, he was active in his community, local and state government affairs. In February 2008, he was awarded co-citizen of the year and being one of the oldest voters in West Virginia, was inducted into West Virginia Hall of Fame by the McDowell County Commission.

He was a very loving person who touched many lives. He especially loved sitting on the benches at Wal-Mart and the Claypool Hill Mall. Mr. Whitaker was a lifetime member of the NRA and a member of the Neighborhood Watch. He will be sadly missed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Annie Dalyai Whitaker; one sister, Callie Patterson; and one brother, Odell Whitaker.

Survivors include one son, Ernest Mike Whitaker and wife, Cynthia of Troutman, N.C.; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Whitaker Lee and husband, Cecil of Tazewell, Va.; five grandchildren, Michael Eric Whitaker and wife, Beth of Conover, N.C., Brian Keith Whitaker and wife, Emily of Lincolnton, N.C., Brandon Scott Whitaker of Troutman, N.C., Myranda Dawn Edmonds of Hillsville, Va., and Chelsey Danielle Edmonds of Tazewell, Va.; four great-grandchildren, William Michael Whitaker, Mason Eugene Whitaker, Samantha Renee' Whitaker, and Natalie Elizabeth Burress; two brothers, Herbert Whitaker and wife, Marie of Columbus, Ga. and Aldmer Whitaker of New Jersey; two sisters, Theresa Bush of Ohio and Helen Brush of Vermont; a host of nieces and nephews; special friends, Linzie and Iris Beavers and family, Geneva and the late Mike Harman and family, Joe Davis and family and to all the Newhall family.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at the Newhall Bible Church in Newhall, W.Va. with the Reverend Kenny Fields officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va., where military graveside rites will be conducted by members of the Barns Beavers VFW Post # 7136 of Tazewell, Va. Steve D. Whittaker of Warsaw died March 9, 1991 at WCCH. He was born January 17, 1940 in Berwind, W. Va., a son of Edna Prater Taylor and the late Douglas Whittaker.

He was a graduate of Perry High School, and manager of "Edna's Grocery Store in Niagara Falls prior to retirement in 1978 due to ill health.

Surviving are his mother; his wife, Mary Fortin Whittaker, whom he married in 1973; his stepfather, Richard Taylor of Orange City, Fla.; three stepsons, Edward Kent, Charles (Betsy) Kent, Albert (Georgette) Kent; five stepdaughters, Theresa (Charles) Raptis, Joan (Robert) Bailey, Shirley (Eugene) Gayford, Sandra McCleran, Clair Kent; two brothers, Mike Whittaker of Mechanicsville, Ind., Larry Whittaker of Orange city, Fla.; two sisters, Edith (Alvin) Ingersole of Niagara Falls, Lucille (Tom) Ryce of Pelhan, Fla.. Mike Whitaker, 69, of Mechanicsville, MD passed away peacefully at his home on August 7, 2010, after suffering with a long illness.

He was born July 3, 1941 in Caretta, WV; to the late Louie Douglas Whitaker and Edna Minnie Prater Taylor; brother to the late Steve Douglas Whitaker and Larry Oliver Whitaker; husband to his late second wife, Mary Katherene Whitaker.

He survived by his beloved wife of 29 years, Darlene Gehring Whitaker; their five children Patty Jean Charles and husband Chris of Sierra Vista, AZ, David Walter Whitaker and wife Karen of Lusby, MD, Jamie Lynn Whitaker and her fiancé TJ Ryan of Coltons Point, MD, Michael Daryl Whitaker of Wichita, KS, Shane Lewis Whitaker of Mechanicsville, MD, in addition, a son Josh Ballard Whitaker of Minneapolis, MN; and daughter Susanna Lee "Suzy" Martinez married to Alvin of Phoenix, AZ; and sisters, Edith Ann Rose Ingersoll and Lucille Rose Ryce of Ontario, Canada and a sister, Mary; grandchildren, Brooklyn Rae Vance, Nathan Ward Ryan, Destiny Raine Whitaker, Derek Thomas Whitaker, David Walter Whitaker Jr., Carmen Lynn Noll, Paige Adrianne Noll, Tucker Gehring Charles, Matthew Michael Martinez, Meghan Michelle Martinez, and Mykaela Marie Martinez; and many other relatives and friends.

He was raised and graduated from Mountain Mission School an orphanage in Grundy, VA on May 22, 1959. After graduation, Mike continued his education at Concord College in Athens, WV.

In 1960, Mike joined the United States Air Force and served this country for several years including tours in Germany, Guam and Vietnam. While serving in the Air Force Mike received several awards including the Bronze Star for his dedicated service. After leaving the Air Force, Mike continue his education at Daytona Beach Community College, were he received his Electronics Certificate. He moved to Southern Maryland 1986, where he supported the Navy as a Project Engineer at Patuxent River Naval Air Station. He was known by his peers as "Mr. Lightning", because of his knowledge in the field of lightning. He retired in 2009 after 35 years of service.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to many and loved devoting his time and attention to his family, children, grandchildren and friends. Mike enjoyed doing the Easter egg hunt, decorating the Christmas tree, making cookies with grandchildren, celebrating birthdays with friends and family and other family gatherings. He loved country music, woodworking, and the great outdoors especially his favorite pastimes fishing, camping and gardening. He also enjoyed many activities with the church youth in his earlier days, such as camping, bike trips, 50 mile hikes and driving to activities.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at The Church of Christ of Latter-day Saints, Patuxent Ward, 22747 Old Rolling Road, Lexington Park, MD 20653 conducted by Bishop Dennis Reed.

A private inurnment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St Mary's, PO Box 625 Leonardtown, MD 20650.

BLUEFIELD, Va. Judith Altizer Whitt, 82, of 109 Valleydale St., Bluefield, Va., died Sunday, August 1, 2010 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center. She was born in Amonate, Va. and was the daughter of the late Charles Altizer and Fay Whitaker Altizer.

She was a registered nurse for over 23 years and had been director of nursing at St. Luke's Hospital.

She is survived by her husband, Ray Steele Whitt; daughter, Barbara Carlson and husband Brian, Dallas, Texas; brother, Harrell Altizer and wife Ruth Marie, Reddington Beach, Fla.; cousin, Geraldine Lawson, Owosso, Mich.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, August 5, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Mausoleum Chapel with Dr. Allen Hammond officiating.

Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, Va. is serving the Judith Altizer Whitt family.
