Jane was 4 years old when Mother died.
She raised a child of her sister Mary Rachel, Susan Ayres, who was their heir.

She became prominent in Knoxville Tennessee society because her husband was twice mayor, was a wealthy industrialist and bank president.

Her home was the site of where a Union artillery batter was stationed during the battle for Knoxville during the Civil War. The home, Annandale, later became Knoxville High School.
