Identify 17 Army Plane Dead

Big Converted Airliner Crashes and Burns Near Premier; Many Persons Saw Army Transport When it Fell

Identification of 17 of 21 United States Army Air Corps men killed early Wednesday afternoon when a converted airliner crashed and burned on a mountainside near Premier was announced this afternoon at Patterson Field, Dayton, O.

Bodies Brought Here

Bodies of the 21 victims remained in local funeral homes. Most of them were mangled and burned beyond recognition, but identification of many was established by means of identification tags or articles removed from clothing.

The transport, a former flagship of the American Airlines, lost a wing at about 500 feet and plunged with smoke pouring from it into a community garden approximately 300 yards up a mountainside and into a ravine. Everyone aboard met instant death and wreckage was scattered for nearly 200 yards down the hillside.

Thousands Visit Scene

Several thousand people visited the little mining community of Premier during the afternoon and evening, but few were able to obtain a view of the wreckage. West Virginia state policemen in charge of Lt. F. C. Crawford of Beckley, McDowell county deputy sheriffs and constables were on duty within a short time after the crash. Later in the ev[e]ning about 20 members of Company ?E? of the West Virginia state guard in command of Capt. J. A. Blevins assisted the police officers. Military police took charge today. McDowell County Sheriff Lucian Fry was also on the scene and Police Chief Harry Chaffins of Welch lent his assistance.

OBITUARY

WILLIAM CHAFFINS, SR., 78, of 310 Edgewood Road, Bluefield, VA, died Oct. 5, 1998. Born in Thacker (Mingo County), he was the son of the late Harry Chaffins and Holly Hoskins Chaffins (of Welch).

He was a graduate of Welch High School and a veteran of World War II. He was employed by Appalachian Power Company for 38 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Welch, where he served as Sunday School superintendent, and since moving to Bluefield, he attended the Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church, Bluefield, VA. He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Tazewell.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Archie Chaffins and Herbert Chaffins. Survivors include his wife, Eula Mae "Jinx" Chaffins; two sons, Thomas R. Chaffins and wife, Marty, of Bluefield, VA, and William A. "Bill" Chaffins Jr. and wife, Karen, of Bluefield; two daughters, Sarah C. Tetteron and husband, Ernie, of Winterville, NC, and Susan C. Davis and husband, "Buck," of Tazewell; one sister, Elaine C. Leach of Princeton; and eight grandchildren.

From what I understand, the family added an s to his last name, to separate the family from any connection Sheriff Don Chafin of Logan County who was a fierce opponent of unionization and received hundreds of thousands of dollars from coal mine operators in return for his violent suppression of the United Mine Workers union.

Harry Chaffins went from the farm to law inforcement, beginnig as a constable in Thacker, Mingo Co. WV and eventually was the police chief of Welch, WV for a number of years.

PERDUE, Martha Chaffins, died on November 14, 2020. Martha was born November 1, 1947, to Archie M. Chaffins and Katherine T. Chaffins. Though she is gone, her larger-than-life personality and trademark flamboyant style will not be forgotten. Martha entered heaven cocktail in hand, ready to kick up the party a notch or two. All who loved her know she arrived at the pearly gates perfectly styled in her signature zebra and leopard prints. She and the angels are probably laughing while she watches over us, making fun of our \"plain boring\" clothes, even as she protects us. No one could pull off leopard and zebra print like Martha. Heaven just became a lot more entertaining because Martha brought laughter and fun anywhere she went.

Martha completed both her bachelor\'s and master\'s degrees at Virginia Commonwealth University. Martha started teaching straight out of college and continued teaching until her retirement. Teaching was Martha\'s true calling. She shared her passion for life and learning with the thousands of children she taught over her long career. Her pride was in her school and all of her students, who loved her as she loved them.

Martha had an uncanny ability to find happiness in her daily activities, no matter how mundane. Her larger than life personality and laugh were contagious to everyone she met.

Martha is survived by her sons, Christopher Perdue and Preston Perdue; daughters-in-law, Susan Perdue and Stephanie Perdue; brother, David Chaffins; sister-in-law, Anne Chaffins; and grandchildren, Erik Perdue, Spencer Perdue, Avery Perdue, Archer Perdue and Hayden Perdue. The family would like to extend their heart felt thanks to Bonnie and Ricky Anderson, Cathie Simpson and all the nurses at the Laurels of Bon Air for all their care and compassion.
