From his biography on Find A Grave:
"He attended the University of Texas until seeing war coming in Europe. He applied for Pilot training in the U.S. Air Corps and worked for the City of Austin Engineering Department until called to duty in 1941. He received his wings October of 1942. He was then assigned to instruct several single pilot training classes at Mission, Texas before transferring to B24 training at Tarrant Field in Ft. Worth. On finishing this phase he was assigned to Liberal Kansas to instruct pilots to fly B24's until he was accepted for training to fly B29's."
