OBITUARY
The News Journal, 31 Mar. 2015
Wallace Hampton Carter was born in Eccles, WV on May 4, 1934 in a coal mining community. He was the first son of Elisha Carter and Goldie Boyd Carter. Wallace was a typical southern boy, hunting, fishing and enjoying the wild mountains of West Virginia. In High School, Wallace played football and basketball. He met the love of his life, Annette Farmer, and they recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. After graduation, he enlisted in the US Navy where he rose to the rank of EM3-Electricians Mate. He served on the USS Laning and loved to tell stories of his days at the sea and on shore patrol.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he and Annette married and attended Concord College together. While in college, they were blessed with the birth of their son, Michael Elisha, and two years later, a daughter, Lynette. After graduation, the family moved to Newark, DE, where Rebecca was born. Wallace started teaching at Brandywine Jr. High School. He coached football at Elkton High while teaching at Elkton Middle. Wallace ended his teaching career at Cherry Hill Middle. He prided himself that he remembered each and every student throughout his 28 years in education.
Pop loved his church and all the people that he encountered. He had a great faith that God will provide for us in all things. He was willing to share whatever he had with those in need.
Wallace was preceded in death by Goldie, his mother; Elisha, his father; sister, JoAnn Heffrin of FL; and infant brother, Gerald.
Wallace is survived by his wife, Annette Farmer Carter; sister, Sharon Stevens of Cross Lanes, WV; three children: Michael and his wife Janice (Whann) of Newark, Lynette and Dr. John Phillips of Earleville, MD, and Rebecca Carter Boothe and husband, Terry of Newark; six grandchildren that he adored: Shelby Carter, Elisha Carter, Dalton Carter, Faith Nicole Boothe, Jaden Cole Boothe, and Slater Ian Phillips.
A visitation will be held from 9:30-11:00 AM on Friday, April 3, 2015 at Calvary Baptist Church, 215 E. Delaware Ave., Newark, DE 19711 followed by a service celebrating Wallace's life at 11:00 AM. Burial with military honors will be at the Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Bear, DE on Tuesday, April 7 at 11:00 am where all are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church.
